Von Willebrand Disease

The most common and underdiagnosed bleeding disorder is Von Willebrand disease (VWD) which was named after the Finnish physician Erik von WIllebrand who first discovered the genetic disorder. The deficiency of the clotting factor is either the body does not make enough von Willebrand factor or von Willebrand factor is not working like it should.

According to hemophilia.org, VWD is the most common bleeding disorder, affecting up to 1% of the US population. It is carried on chromosome 12 and occurs equally in men and women.
